LEADERSHIP CIRCLE Dedications

Joan Marie Aylward
In memory of strong women everywhere, most especially Mary Bridget (Colbert) Harding and Maud Elsie (Pike) Aylward. To all the women who inspired me through their leadership; vision; love of reading; enduring support; pursuit of education and the strength to speak up and speak out on things that matter. To our daughters and granddaughters, may they remain vigilant and empathetic as they reach for their possibilities. In tribute to nurses and caregivers who inspire us all in the growth of empathy and a deep culture of caring. Women today stand on the shoulders of those women who have gone before us. May we continue to honour them with their hard-won franchise of voting and by putting ourselves out there to hold possible office.

Dr. Amanda Bittner

AnnMarie Candow

In honour of my Mother, Annie May, and all the strong resilient women of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Kathleen Connors & Kara Connors

Margo Connors and Robert Stack

Julia Courtney and Scott Oxford

In memory of our mothers, Delia Felger Courtney and Nancy Scott Oxford.

Chesley Crosbie

In honour of Jane Furneaux Crosbie, who was one of ten women who provided the funds to purchase the property on Military Road for the purpose of establishing the Newfoundland Status of Women Council (now the St. John's Status of Women Council).

David Crosbie
In memory of my grandmothers Janet Miller Ayre Murray and Lady Mitchie Ann Crosbie and my mother Gert Crosbie and partner Sue Miller

Jessica Dellow and Nicholas Crosbie
In honour of our grandmothers: Annie Pelley Brake, Gertrude Murray Crosbie, Elizabeth McIntosh Dellow, and Ellen Hazelwood Howitt. Each of these women achieved and contributed greatly within the spaces they were allowed to occupy. Their daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters build on their legacy every day.

BJ Danylchuk

Judith Dearlove & Joan Peck
In celebration of Margot Duley, Carol Haddad, and the Persistence Theatre Company
Shannie Duff
A dedication to my beloved resilient and determined mother, Helena McGrath Frecker BA, MA,LLD 1906-1993. Born on the now resettled Island of Oderin, Placentia Bay.  When she was nine years old her father moved his family to St. John’s to ensure a better education for his children. She graduated from high school at Mercy Convent  School, but in order to enroll in the new Memorial University she needed courses in Physics and Chemistry which were not available in her Catholic Girls school. With the assistance of a tutor from Bishop Field College, an Anglican Boys School, she completed the required courses and won the Jubilee Scholarship in her graduating year. She was the first graduate of Memorial University and went on to obtain a Masters Degree from the University of Toronto in English Literature and Latin and returned home to teach at Memorial University College. Two years later, when she married my father, she was forced to resign her teaching position due to a university hiring policy barring married women from teaching positions. Twenty years and eight children later, hiring policies had become more enlightened and my mother was able to return to her teaching position at the University where she taught until her retirement.

Dr. Margot I. Duley
In memory of Florence Pitcher Duley, Eliza Vavasour Pitcher, Tryphena Soper Duley and Margaret Duley, all brave and accomplished women in very different ways; and for Heather MacLellan, a tireless advocate for historical preservation.

Roberta Edgecombe Robb

In honour of my parents Margery and Arthur Edgecombe and my Uncle John Butler, whose love and support in my formative years enabled me to walk a non-traditional career path - always mindful of the need to move women’s rights forward. It is a great privilege to support this tribute to one of the many wonderful women - Armine Nutting Gosling - who walked this equity road with such success nearly one hundred years ago, and showed us all how to do it! And in memory of Anne Caron - a dear friend.

Frances Ennis

Judy May Foote
In celebration of my daughters Carla Jean Foote & Heidi Ellen Lee Foote, and granddaughters Katie May Young, Meadow Foote & Ruby Jude Tanner.

Maria French
In memory of my mother, Carmel McGrory, who was a fearless female entrepreneur so many years ago. She instilled courage and drive in me, always advocating for the equality of women. I am also thankful for my mother-in-law, Margaret French, whose encouragement for the education of all women in our family left an unwavering impression on our daughters and granddaughters. Because of Armine Nutting Gosling's remarkable contributions, and those who worked beside her, we carry forward the torch of equality and empowerment, inspired by their legacy, making strides in our own lives and communities.

Dr. Carol J. Haddad

With thanks to Dr. Margot Duley, whose pioneering scholarship on the history of the Newfoundland Women's Suffrage movement brought Armine's story to us, and to Persistence Theatre for planning and promoting this statue.

Lois Hoegg
In honour of Janet Miller Ayre Murray who was instrumental in pressuring the Newfoundland Legislature to amend the Law Society Act (1910) to permit women to practice law in Newfoundland. She had been denied enrollment in the Law Society because she was a woman. The amendment provided that the word "persons" in the Act "shall be held to extend to and to include a female person so as to confer upon all women the right to be entered as clerks, admitted as law students, enrolled as Solicitors, and called to the Bar, and to exercise fully all the rights and...obligations which are conferred and imposed upon men under the provisions of the said [Act]". The women lawyers and judges in this province stand on the shoulders of Janet Miller.
Lynne C. Howarth
In celebration of Drs. Margot Duley and Carol Haddad

May Armine Nutting Gosling’s Statue be a reminder of past present and future endeavours. Here’s to RaisingWomenUp.

In honour of the women who came before me -The remarkable women whose lives shaped me in immeasurable ways. My mother, Mary Delaney Snow; my aunt, Elizabeth (Betty) Delaney Moore; my grandmother, Bridget Keefe Delaney; and my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Hall Delaney. Their strength, quiet courage, unwavering resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit have been the guiding lights of my life. They were not only role models but the very foundation upon which I stand. May their legacies live on through the work I do and the woman I strive to be.

Dr. Anne Stewart Staveley & Dr. Michael Staveley
In gratitude for the lifelong commitment of Anne Ford Leslie and Florence Mary Staveley to a woman's right to be treated equitably in her work in the public and private sphere. In memory also of great -grandmothers and great -aunts Margaret Deacon McColl, Jane Cuthbertson Leslie, and May Stewart McColl, who all worked in stores and factories, grand houses and police barracks. Also, in honour of the next generation of working women in universities, colleges, studios and community organizations, Victoria, Alice and James pay tribute to their godmothers, Mary Elizabeth Barry, Margery Green, Mabel Farmer, Helen Jones and Mary West Pratt.

Sarah Stoodley

Eleanor Swanson

Caitlin Urquhart
In loving memory of Shelagh Marion Harris (nee Giles), a teacher, a community builder and an inspiration. When she rose to leadership, she was a mentor to and champion for women, lifting them up to follow in her footsteps. She was an endlessly curious world-traveler, a tireless volunteer and fundraiser for local causes, and never missed an opportunity to offer tea and a sweet treat, or to correct your grammar. I am guided by her determination, commitment to service and her compassion each day. May my dear late grandma's memory live on alongside Armine Nutting Gosling and these other notable individuals.
