Armine’s story deeply resonates with me, reflecting my admiration for my grandmother, an incredible teacher who dedicated her life to educating young children in Uganda.

In a society where access to education for women was often denied to girls, my grandmother stood out as one of the few educated women.

She poured her heart into teaching at a primary school, ensuring her students thrived and reached their potential.

Beyond her role as an educator, she was a steadfast support for her family, tirelessly providing for them.

The memories of my holidays spent in the village with my siblings and cousins brim with warmth and love, a testament to her nurturing spirit.

What defines a true leader?

In my opinion, the life my grandmother lives exemplifies a true leader.

She embodies resilience, courage, integrity, responsibility, and compassion daily.

Armine, too, displayed all these traits, being both a mother and the Principal of the Girls’ School.

My grandmother continues to serve as my biggest role model, and I strive to make her proud each day.

At the age of 21, Armine left her home to become the Principal of the Girls’ School in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.

I felt a deep connection with Armine once I learned this part of her story because I, too, left my home in Uganda at 21 to pursue my education.

Armine moved with an evident passion for empowering young women through education.

My path might not have been as clear as Armine’s, but  it reflected the same call: education.

I believed that attending university would open doors, not just for me but for my entire family, especially my siblings.

Leaving home meant leaving behind all the comforts,  family, and friends.

Like Armine, I faced the uncertainty of starting over in a new place, but my desire to grow and learn helped me persevere.

As I pursue my degree in Mathematics, a field often dominated by men, I am resolute in breaking barriers and creating opportunities for others.

I envision a world where women can confidently achieve their aspirations, just as Armine and I strive to do.

Throughout my life in Uganda, I have witnessed many women boldly taking their places at the forefront of politics, defying stereotypes to ensure their voices are heard.

One standout figure is Rebecca Kadaga, the first female Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, serving from 2011 to 2021.

She fought hard against gender-based violence in a society where women struggle to speak up when it comes to these matters.

Leading in a male-dominated parliament, Kadaga navigated deep-rooted biases with poise and authority.

She felt her position was essential to women, as it helped them influence policies in Uganda.

She earned a reputation for fairness, discipline, and independence.

Her career is an inspiration to many young girls in Uganda as they learn about her legacy.

I encourage you to reflect on the women who have paved the way for your success.

Consider the sacrifices they’ve made and the invaluable lessons they’ve imparted.

How can you ensure their legacies endure?

These extraordinary women, alongside Armine and my grandmother, prove that transformative change often begins with one brave decision.

Let's honour their legacy and strive to be the change-makers in our own lives and communities.
